World improvers!

Yesterday, the 20th of June, our Not Alone project was awarded as winner in the first round of World Improver!

We are very proud! But the contest is not the most important for us, we are committed to act and now most importantly we will continue the project and find people to volunteer for the elderly (and of course volunteer by ourselves as well)

Are you interested in volunteering for the elderly? See "Who to contact/links" for contact information in Stockholm area, or contact us (mia.magnusson83Xgmail.com, +46 708 58 15 95) to help you find contacts in other cities, areas and countries.

Also, please contact us if you know who to contact in your area and we can put up their contact information on this blog.

Together we can make a difference!

Inspiring videos

Volunteers at SN Home (Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged Sick) in Singapore are enjoying some games with the residents at the old folk home. SN Home taps on Social Media and YouTube to reach out to more volunteers. See SN Home Volunteer Facebook Page.

Contact the Elderly is a small national charity in United Kingdom which aims to alleviate the acute loneliness often felt by older people. They organises regular Sunday afternoon tea parties for people over 75 who live alone with little or no support from friends and family. Volunteer drivers, members and volunteer host families get together for an afternoon full of fun and laughter. A very simple idea that makes a real difference.

On some occasions they visit art galleries and other such places to have their tea parties.

These are good and sound campaigning methods we can learn from. Using video streaming to promote and bring interest to the work that volunteers do can be an inspiring way to encourage more people to hop onboard.

So far, the Coordinators we have spoken to, both within the municipality offices and elderly homes, have all described that they are in need of volunteers, and are more than happy if we can help them to spread the word to inspire more individuals to contact them.

We hope we can soon put together some videos that will elaborate more about our experience in elderly care volunteering within the greater Stockholm regions.

Mia, Mehdi and Joanne

We met up in Solna for dinner and discussions in May 2010. This was the breakthrough point that moved us towards devoting our time and effort to understand and contribute to the elderly communities in Stockholm Sweden, starting with municipalities like Sundbyberg and Sollentuna (close to where we work, live or play sports).

Our get-together as a team was spearheaded by World Improver competition held in Stockholm Sweden during summer 2010. Coming from diverse nations and backgrounds, we have an epiphanically easy time getting along, setting common goals, and distributing project tasks required for us to achieve our goals. It is a delightful gathering of like-minded people who are ultimately so unlike one another. The alikeness of love and care in our hearts are perhaps more alike than we imagined.

Follow us as we share our journey with you as we discover, reflect, act and react to improve our world.
